Covid-19 The Way Forward & The Fear of Third Wave

For those who will rather listen

We are already out of second-wave and that’s a big relief. Meanwhile, the trauma of the past still haunts us, there is fear of the third wave – which is inevitable if our chief scientific advisor is to be believed.

Here’s how we exactly progressed since a month: from 4th April to 5th June, India has seen 1.8 lakh Covid-19 deaths. Source: The Quint.

The average number of new infections reported each day in India falls by more than 178,000 over the last 3 weeks, 46% of its previous peak. As of 12th June. Source.

New Centralised Vaccine Policy

Modi has announced that now 75% of total produced vaccines would be made available for free to the states. Rest 25% would be given to private hospitals that can charge maximum 150Rs. from people as service charge. Other changes would also be there so its cost would be much higher for the people who want to pay.

While the maximum price for Covaxin and Covishield has been fixed at Rs 1,410 and Rs 780 per dose respectively, Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine will cost Rs 1,145 per dose in private hospitals. Source.

Modi has introduced a spray vaccine that can be consumed through your nose and can be effective against Covid. This Nasal vaccine is currently under trial and would be available for medication by August if everything goes right. Bharat Biotech is working on it. Read more about it here.

The central government claims that all Indian Adults will be vaccinated by December 2021.

Another important announcement by the government: It has finalized an advance payment of Rs. 1,500 cr to Biological-E for 30 crore Covid vaccines it is trying to build currently. It is called Corbevax. It has shown promising results in phase 1 & 2 trials. And phase 3 trials are currently going on. It is likely to be available in the next few months. Read more here.

Centre government also placed orders for 44 crore vaccines – 25 crores CoviShields and 19 Crore Covaxin – with 30% Advanced payment which will be given to the government from momentarily to December 2021.

A problem with the vaccination policy

Do you know that there are 13 Pharma PSUs with some upgrades that could produce crores of vaccine doses? And only less than 5 of them are producing vaccines currently.

While we are still having a hard time forgiving the central government as it gave away 66 million vaccine doses just before we needed them desperately and denying the validity of international vaccine Pfizer (Read the blunders of the past here), we can hope for better at least this time.

All you need to know about vaccines

Covaxin: It has 78% efficacy and in the process of getting approved by WHO under Emergency Use Listing.

Covishield has an efficacy of 70.14%.

Pfizer vaccine is also a good option.

So let’s just hope we have a fourth and fifth one too – Corbevax and the nasal one.

Let’s just hope that the Third Wave will never come. Let’s just hope that Government priorities remain in the interest of the public and not political power.

OH, did I tell you the government is also doing something about CoWin app too? The government has decided to block users who are performing 1000+ searches on CoWin app and generating 50+ OTPs in a day. Haha.
